Grooming Your Australian Shepherd: Why Aussies Are Surprisingly Low Maintenance
A beautiful coat does not have to mean constant grooming. One of the biggest myths about Australian Shepherds, Mini Aussies, and Mini American Shepherds is that they need endless coat care.
The truth? Their coat was built to work. When maintained correctly, it is practical, protective, and much easier to care for than most people expect.
The Biggest Grooming Myth
Long hair does not automatically mean high maintenance.
People see the feathering, the full tail or britches, the fluffy chest, and assume an Aussie must need constant grooming appointments.
But an Australian Shepherd coat is not like a doodle coat or a continuously growing clipped breed. It is a functional double coat. It sheds, protects, insulates, and often releases dirt once dry.
Why The Coat Works
The Aussie coat was designed for real life.
Australian Shepherds were working dogs. Their coat had to protect them from sun, wind, rain, brush, insects, heat, cold, and rough outdoor conditions.
That is why a well-kept Aussie coat should still look natural. It should not be shaved down, sculpted into a teddy bear, or stripped of its purpose.

A healthy Australian Shepherd, Mini Aussie, or Mini American Shepherd should not be shaved for routine grooming or summer heat.
Their double coat helps regulate temperature, protect the skin from sun exposure, repel dirt, and shield the dog from the elements. Shaving can interfere with that natural function and may change the way the coat grows back.
There are veterinary exceptions — surgery, severe matting, wounds, or medical skin treatment — but shaving should not be your normal grooming plan.
What Makes Aussies Low Maintenance?
The Pretty Dog Trap
Do not groom the function out of the breed.
Some groomers try to make every fluffy dog look rounded, sculpted, and overly trimmed. That may work for other breeds, but it is not ideal for an Aussie.
A beautiful Australian Shepherd should still look athletic, natural, and functional. Clean feet, tidy hocks, trimmed nails, and a brushed-out coat are usually enough.
The best-looking Aussies are often not the ones groomed the most. They are the ones whose natural coat has been properly maintained.
A Simple Aussie Grooming Routine
Weekly
Brush + Check
Brush for 10–15 minutes. Check behind ears, britches, armpits, belly, and tail feathering for tangles.
Every 2–4 Weeks
Nails + Ears
Trim or grind nails regularly. Check ears and clean only as needed.
Every 6–10 Weeks
Bath + Blow Dry
Bathe when dirty, rinse well, and dry thoroughly. A high-velocity dryer can help during shedding season.

What About Shedding?

During those seasons, brush more often, use the right tools, and consider a bath plus high-velocity dryer to help loosen dead coat.
Shedding is normal. Matting is not. Regular brushing keeps the coat functional and comfortable.
